Jones on Using Serline Chucks on Taig Lathes

Boring Head For Sherline Mill | Page 2 | The Hobby-Machinist

About two inches is pretty well accepted for the small boring heads, Perhaps the part No. 1 1/2 is a tip off to size. Tom, on a Sherline lathe boring more than a 3" hole can be an adventure. At 3", the boring head can shake the mill right off the table! However, within those limits the S1-1/2...

The boring head was first published in the Model Engineers' Workshop magazine in 2002 (the book then in 2004) when the mini mills were only just appearing, apart maybe for the Tiag/Sherline mills which I think had been around earlier. The design therefore had the larger mill drills in mind.

Sherline 5400, X2, or Taig?

THe taig is stronger, and kinda inbetween the sherline and x2 in strength. The x2 looks the strongest, being all cast iron. My choice would be the XJ-9510 at $495.

Sherline, Microlux or the Taig lathe/mill? | Home Model …

The Sherline lathe I owned was the long bed model. I would consider that over the short one. My current small lathe is the Taig. I sold the Sherline. For me, the Taig is better at what these small machines do, but I could do the same work on the Sherline lathe. I simply like the Taig better. Milling Machines:

help with sherline mill flycutter/boring

Feb 2006. Posts. 1187. Hey Doc, first off a Crition boring head is about the size of the Sherline mill head. So its a little big to be putting on there and you would have to take such light cuts. Same with the flycutting, the cuts would probably be around .001 to .003 at the most.

Boring with Sherline lathe | The Hobby-Machinist

A carbide bar can go 8-10 times its diameter before running into this same problem. The Sherline tools are HSS. The 5/16" bar in 1.5" length, can theoretically go 1.25" deep so if your bore is less than this, you're good. A Micro 100 solid carbide bar of the same diameter would be able to about 2.5" deep.

Machinist's Hammer Head on Sherline Lathe (mill?)

The head is a 1" diameter cylinder, 2.5 inches long. The handle hole is tapped 1/2-20 and there's a bit of a .600 hole before the threads start to allow the handle to 'vanish' into the head. Material is 6061. To get a flat bottom on the hole, the suggested order of operations was to: Drill close to the minor diameter.

Help me buy tools and tooling for my inbound Sherline mill!

Stick with fine pitch roughing end mills on the Sherline mill. The Sherline boring head is okay but it is very light duty and has a limited range. I prefer a small Criterion head and like the S-1-1/2A. Very precise and bulletproof. It takes 3/8" shank bars. For boring bars, I suggest the 3/8" shanked HSS/cobalt sets.
